Burning – FAQ’s

Am I permitted to burn within the Borough limits?

Yes, provided the Borough has not issued a Burn Ban.

Are there certain days/hours that I am permitted to burn?

Yes.  Open burning of trees, tree limbs, logs, brush, stumps, leaves or grass or shrubbery clippings, in a safe and unoffensive manner, shall be conducted on the first (1st) and third (3rd) Wednesday and the second (2nd) and fourth (4th) Saturday of each month between the hours of 8:00 am and 6:00 pm.  Outdoor campfires and small bonfires for cooking, ceremonies, or recreation are allowed provided they do not cause a public nuisance.

Do I need a permit to burn outdoors?

No, a permit is not required.  As a courtesy, we do recommend calling the County Control non-emergency number (814.623.1105) in advance to let them know you will be open burning.

Are there any burning restrictions?

Yes.  The following restrictions apply:

  • There shall be no burning on the streets.
  • If in a container, a fire must be at least fifteen (15′) feet from a structure; if on an open pile, a fire must be at least fity (50′) feet from a structure.
  • No garbage, inorganic material, including plastics or animal feces, are to be burned.
